March 26 @ 5:00 pm

Join us March 26 at 5pm at the Notre-Dame Cathedral to celebrate the Chrism Mass.

The Chrism Mass is a special annual Mass where our Archdiocese gathers together to receive the new holy oils for the year. The Archbishop blesses three different oils which are then distributed to parishes:

  • Oil of the Sick – Used during the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick to “bring comfort and support to the sick in their infirmity.” (Ceremonial of Bishops, 274)
  • Oil of Catechumens – Used to anoint those who are to be baptized.
  • Sacred Chrism – “Used to anoint the newly baptized, to seal the candidates for confirmation, and to anoint the hands of presbyters and the heads of bishops at their ordination.” (Ceremonial of Bishops, 274)
Anointing with oil has all these meanings in the sacramental life. The pre-baptismal anointing with the oil of catechumens signifies cleansing and strengthening; the anointing of the sick expresses healing and comfort. The post-baptismal anointing with sacred chrism in Confirmation and Ordination is the sign of consecration. By Confirmation Christians, that is, those who are anointed, share more completely in the mission of Jesus Christ and the fullness of the Holy Spirit with which he is filled, so that their lives may give off ‘the aroma of Christ.’ [2 Cor 2, 15])
