Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall

Since November 1st in our stores, Halloween costumes have been replaced by Christmas decorations. We probably hoped that our churches would soon do the same. But on this first Sunday in December, the word of God seems far away from Christmas. “Beware, keep alert… Therefore, keep awake… And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.” (Mk 13:33, 35, 37) Where are the manger, the angels and the shepherds?

Let us remember that the word “advent” means “coming”. This first Sunday does not seek to commemorate the first coming of Christ, but rather to prepare us for his coming at the end of time. Jesus asked, “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” (Lk 18:8) If we take seriously Jesus’ invitation to “keep awake,” we will be able to answer “yes.” “The testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you. […] He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Cor 1:6,8).
