Summary
This position reports directly to the Archbishop and People and Culture Director and closely collaborates with Safe Environment within the RCECOC. The main stakeholders outside of the RCECOC are the diocesan legal counsels. The delegate will deal with issues related to sexual abuse or to allegations of misconduct, harassment and violence in the workplace. The delegate will also act as a resource person to the Diocesan Advisory Committee regarding allegations of abuse and misconduct (*particularly for clerics).
Responsibilities and Tasks
- Represent the Archbishop in judicial matters: ensure the Archbishop is updated on the progress of legal matters as required. Speak frankly with the Archbishop on the basis of justice and common sense.
- Work closely with diocesan lawyers to see matters through.
- Update the Advisory Committee annually on the status of cases.
- Prepare an annual update for audit purposes.
- Manage deadlines, particularly when limitations are approaching for legal action and/or settlements.
- Participate and make decisions, in the context of mediations and other negotiation dynamics.
- Attend court proceeding as the representative of the RCECOC.
- Review and approve invoices from law offices.
- Conduct research information online and through electronic and paper files.
- Coordinate or conduct internal investigations harassment and violence in the workplace and recommend appropriate corrective action.
- Create reports and keep track of investigation documents as required.
- Complete other related duties as required.
Job Requirements and Skills
- Confidentiality and discretion are of the utmost importance in this role.
- 5-years’ experience in a related field.
- Excellent written, verbal, and public speaking skills in English and French.
- Strong skills in Microsoft 365 programs namely Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills with attention to detail
- Knowledge of the governing structures of the Catholic Church, particularly at the diocesan level and of those engaged in pastoral ministry (clergy and laity)
- Ability to communicate with people of all social and economic conditions as found within the community of the Church and general community.
- Sensitivity to the situation of victims of clergy abuse, and their families, combined with an awareness of the obligations to the Church and its ability to continue its mission.
- Some knowledge of canon and civil laws and the ability to apply same to cases.
- Formal legal education – either as a lawyer or paralegal – is considered an asset
- Pastoral formation through formal education and/or years of practical experience is considered an asset.
- Ability to communicate with legal professionals and being able to give instructions to legal counsel.
