Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall Affirms Commitment to Reconciliation and Respect
June 21, 2025
The Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall is honoured to join communities across Canada in celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, 2025. This day serves as a profound opportunity to recognize and honour the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples who have shaped and continue to shape our shared national heritage.
As a faith community, we acknowledge the deep spiritual connection that Indigenous Peoples have with the Creator, the land, and their traditions. This day is also a reminder of the ongoing journey of reconciliation—a path to healing and restoring relationships marked by a commitment to justice, mutual respect, and understanding.
His Grace, Archbishop Marcel Damphousse, reiterates the Archdiocese’s unwavering dedication to fostering meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities. “National Indigenous Peoples Day invites us all to listen with open hearts, learn from one another, and walk together towards a future of hope and unity,” said Archbishop Damphousse. “This is a time to celebrate the enduring wisdom of Indigenous cultures and to reflect on our shared responsibility to seek reconciliation and renewal.”
The Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall remains committed to:
- Supporting initiatives that promote the preservation and celebration of Indigenous languages, arts, and traditions.
- Engaging in dialogue and partnerships that uphold the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
- Providing spaces for prayer, cultural expression, and community-building that honour Indigenous spirituality and heritage.
- An Indigenous Elders celebration of the land June 21, 2025 from 1-4pm on the site of Holy Spirit Church Stittsville, ON.
We encourage all people of faith and goodwill to take part in events and activities that celebrate the vibrancy and diversity of Indigenous Peoples. Whether through participation in educational workshops, local ceremonies, or moments of personal reflection, this day offers significant opportunities to deepen our understanding and solidarity.
On this National Indigenous Peoples Day, let us all commit to walking together in the spirit of reconciliation, inspired by the values of respect, humility, and love that are at the heart of the Gospel.
