Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Msgr. Kevin Maloney, VG. He died on Friday, September 20, 2024, at the Ottawa Hospital – General Campus, at the age of 78.

Msgr. Kevin Maloney was born on June 22, 1946, in Cornwall, Ontario. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts from St. Francis Xavier University, and he studied theology and religious education at St. Paul University Seminary.

He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Alexandria by Bishop Adolphe Proulx on February 11, 1972, at St. Columban’s Church in Cornwall. He began his priestly ministry as assistant pastor of St. Theresa de Lisieux Parish, and later of St. Columban Parish, both in Cornwall. He then went on to become a pastor in many parishes in the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall: Blessed Sacrament in Cornwall, Our Lady of Grace in Ingleside, St. Pius X in Long Sault, St. Columban and St. Peter, both in Cornwall.

He acted as coordinator of the Marriage Preparation Courses in Cornwall for 14 years. In 1974, he helped found the Big Brother program in Cornwall and remained connected to that organization for decades. He has been director and coordinator of religious education for the English sector of the Dundas, Stormont and Glengarry Separate School Board. He acted as spiritual director for the English section of the Cursillo Movement and chaplain at the Cornwall jail. He assisted the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall with its Permanent Diaconate program and in various other roles, including Dean, President of the English Deanery, Episcopal Vicar for the Pastoral Affairs in the English Sector and Moderator of the Curia. He was pastor of St. Francis de Sales Parish in Cornwall since 2014. He began as Vicar General in 2018, first for the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall, and then for the Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall. On August 1, 2024, he was also appointed pastor of St. Columban parish in Cornwall.

Msgr. Kevin was a true pillar of his community. He made an impact on everyone he encountered, earning him the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce’s 2019 Citizen of the Year award. Very involved in his parishes, he was always available and attentive to the needs of his parishioners. He was a man of prayer and a great friend to many priests. Since the amalgamation, he was a champion for the Alexandria-Cornwall portion of our new diocese. To the end, Msgr. Kevin remained young at heart, as evidenced by his great sense of humor and love of travel.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Columban’s Church (36 Fourth Street West, Cornwall) on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. The Funeral Service may be viewed by livestream at www.facebook.com/kavproductions. (A Facebook account is not required). Interment in St. Andrew’s Parish Cemetery to follow.

Please keep Msgr. Kevin and his family in your prayers.

I have fought the good fight; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. Now waiting for me is the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day—and not only to me, but to all those who have eagerly longed for his appearance. (2 Timothy 4:7-8)
