Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall

The National Holocaust Memorial in Ottawa stands as a solemn and sacred testament to the millions of innocent lives lost under the Nazi regime, and as a tribute to the courage and resilience of Holocaust survivors who have enriched our nation. It is profoundly distressing to learn of its recent desecration. While peaceful protest is a cherished part of our democratic tradition, the defacement of a site so sacred to survivors, victims, and their families is an affront to the dignity and memory of all those who suffered.

As your Archbishop, I reach out in solidarity to our Jewish brothers and sisters, to all faith leaders, and to the Ottawa Police Service. Together, let us condemn hatred in every form and reaffirm our commitment to building a community rooted in respect, compassion, and unity.

Archbishop Marcel Damphousse

Archbishop of Ottawa-Cornwall
